The second installment of the Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyers was originally published in September 2006 as a follow up to the original Twilight. Some time after all of the happenings in the first novel Bella appears to be blissfully happy in her own romantic, set ways with her vampire boyfriend Edward Cullen. After a few pages however we begin to realise that this novel is much darker than its prequel. Bella Swan turns 18, in Forks and accepts a invite to the Cullen’s house to celebrate. This however is the protagonist for the rest of the story, a simple paper cut provokes an almost-vampire attack as they fail to control there natural instincts for human blood and only with a quick intervention from Edward is Bella safe.
After considering the risk to his human partner, Edward and the Cullens’ simply vanish one day with the lie that the head of the family has taken up a new hospital residency in Los Angeles, knowing that the Forks area is beginning to become a much more dangerous place for others and their own presence. Bella, tries in vain to catch up with Edward but is found in a crumpled state amongst the forest undergrowth…. Blank, simply blank of emotion Bella manages to continue day to day but with a broken heart and the loss of her other. This is where the book really begins as it explores emotions and new characters are introduced with further ones developed.

Indeed, the vampire film genre itself seems to be becoming on strong at the moment, perhaps spurred on by the current economic climate the ‘out of reality scenario’ full of mystic creatures, beautiful and immortal has yet again become popular amongst film studios worldwide. Perhaps this first recently reinvented itself with the Harry Potter series – loved by both adults and children alike. Vampires themselves as a mystic creature are encountered in almost every civilizations ancient text. Generally associated with ‘the Other’, the different, that the lay men were afraid of in a world of dark magic without the empirical evidence of science yet applied. The most famous European myth that possibly introduced the more popular culture to the world of Vampirism is that of Elizabeth Bathory, the Hungarian Countess who (according to History texts) murdered hundreds of young girls and women, to bathe in their blood to preserve her youth. More commonly known as The Blood Countess, she was locked within a castle for 4 years before her death, having left a legacy to modern day.
The most modern piece of fiction associated with vampires is from Bram Stroker and his Dracula Novel (first published in 1897) after years of researching European folklore. This is a classic to this day, the film inspired by this being an early classic – Nosferatu. Full of creeping shadows and still is considered to be a monumental piece of film-making. The legend lives on…
In the 90′s an entire generation had Buffy The Vampire Slayer to relate to, more recently Stephenie Meyer produced Twilight, her first novel in 2005, spurred on by a dream and initially encountered a mere 75,000 print copies after having been signed by Little, Brown and Company. It was her sister who encouraged her to write to publishing companies, after 15 rejections with many unanswered response she eventually got to release her work. Within a month it was a best seller on The Times New York Best Seller List. The rest, seeing as you are reading this is history.
Fans of the Twilight Saga come from all walks of life and various generations, how we love to see a connection between differing cultures of life, how the Other really should be embraced. Twilight and its series can be dissected to comment upon various everyday issues, but at the end of the day. It’s a love story, one to be embraced and to take to heart, between a Vampire and a human.
